Obituary for Louis Albert Stewart, Jr.

Louis A. Stewart Jr. passed away, at the age of 90, on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Cartersville Medical Center.

Mr. Stewart was a U.S. Army Veteran and is survived by his wife, Catherine, five children and three step children Nancy Koliba, Linda Dawkins, Mark Stewart, Robert Stewart, Scott Stewart, Margaret Whelchel, Elizabeth Sappington, and Mary Mullinax.

Mr. Stewart was born in 1927 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He grew up in Indianapolis and was the only son of Louis Stewart Sr. and Ester Stewart. He attended Warren-Central High School in Indianapolis.

He enlisted in the Army on his 19th birthday in June 1946. After completing basic and Airborne training, Mr. Stewart was assigned to the 11th Airborne and sent to Japan. Mr. Stewart fought in Korea and Vietnam. Mr. Stewart proudly served with the 3rd Infantry Division, the 7th Infantry Division, the 101st Airborne Division (The Screaming Eagles) and as an instructor while assigned to the Army Airborne School. Mr. Stewart served with the 5th Special Forces while in Vietnam and his last duty assignment was with Company O, 75th Infantry, (Arctic Rangers). Mr. Stewart retired in 1972 after proudly serving 26 years in the U.S. Army. During his career, Mr. Stewart was an Airborne Instructor, attaining Master Parachutist status (987 jumps including combat jumps in Korea and Vietnam (where he earned Vietnamese Jump wings). He was also in Special Forces and the Army Rangers. He was a Jumpmaster and a Pathfinder and received numerous awards including: The Combat Infantry Badge (2nd) award, The Bronze Star with V (valor), The Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, the Army Commendation Medal and the Good Conduct medal (x 9).

Mr. Stewart was always proud of being a soldier. Once he was asked if he ever regretted going into the Army, especially during battle. Mr. Stewart replied, “During those times, I wanted to be someplace else, but I always loved being a soldier.”

A memorial service will be held on Friday July 21, 2017, at 10:30 AM at the Georgia National Cemetery.
